Sabine Hess and Nicolas Polli. From the series, One Bed, Two Blankets, Seventy-Six Rules
One Bed, Two Blankets, Seventy-Six Rules
One Bed, Two Blankets, Seventy-Six Rules is the first collaboration between artist couple Sabine Hess and Nicolas Polli. After first meeting in a village in the Italian part of Switzerland, and living initially in a long-distance relationship, in 2023 they began to discuss moving in together. The idea of developing an artwork around living together was initiated later that year during a residency at Verzasca Fotofestival, where they tested the idea of cohabiting for the first time. After one year, a new chapter was born whilst Polli and Hess were residing in La Becque during the Biennale Images Vevey in 2024. At Peckham 24, the work will have its first international appearance, and has been developed into a site specific installation resembling a house, with images of different scales set within it.
In a humorous and experimental fashion, the two artists play with norms and ideas surrounding their perception of what a ‘relationship’ might look and feel like. In their intimate and playful images, they confront both the interpersonal and creative aspects of living together as a couple, sharing space whilst tentatively defining boundaries. The viewer is invited to enter their new home, a place that—like their relationship—is still undergoing transformation and adaptation. The work incorporates a series of texts, developed collaboratively by Polli and Hess in states of reflection and critique. They come to constitute a set of rules for how to navigate life as a couple, but also a personal manifesto for how to grow together.
