This panel brings together two artists who weave together fragments of history, identity and imagination to explore universal themes of home, belonging and the ephemeral moments that shape us. Tshepiso Moropa will discuss Ditoro, meaning “dreams” in SeTswana, a series of handcrafted collages assembled from archival images from the African continent, sourced both online and from her own personal collection. Guided by intuition, Moropa constructs new visual narratives through which past and present, seen and unseen, and personal and collective, converge to breathe new life into forgotten histories. Tanya Traboulsi will share insights into her work Beirut, A Recurring Dream. Born out of a desire to build a visual record of Beirut’s beauty and resilience, the artist combines vintage prints from her family archive with her own photographs to create a visual dialogue, that reimagines the city through memory, history and lived experience.
The artists will be joined by Thyago Nogueira, Head of the Contemporary Photography Department at Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) in Brazil and a member of the Selection Committee for the V&A Parasol Foundation Prize for Women in Photography.
