NETWORKS OF SOLIDARITY: Photography, Resistance and the Art of Healing (with Spandita Malik and Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora)

  • Studio 1, Sunset Studios Unit B2.1, 2nd Floor, RED STAIRS, Bussey Building 133 Copeland Road London, England, SE15 3SN United Kingdom (map)

In their socially engaged photographic practices, artists Spandita Malik and Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora, share a commitment to highlighting issues of gender-based violence and intergenerational trauma, whether in rural villages across India or marginalised communities in the West Midlands. This panel discussion brings the two artists into a conversation to discuss their collaborative practices and consider the role that photography can play as a tool of resistance, empowerment and healing. Malik will draw on insights from Jālī – Meshes of Resistance – a series of portraits of women living in rural India that combine photography with intricate embroidery hand-stitched by her sitters. Dhaliwal-Boora will discuss a place called home, which explores the intersection of gender, class and place through the voices of four young girls and their families, and the impact of generational trauma. They will be joined by Fiona Rogers, Curator, V&A Parasol Foundation of Women in Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum who will chair the discussion.
